Aren’t chiropractors just “back” doctors?

1. What is subluxation?

A vertebra out of normal alignment with the one above and below has been subluxated. This may impede upon the spinal nerves interfering with nerve transmission. This is known as the cause of dis-ease. [top]

2. How did I get "subluxated"?

Trauma to the area, toxins and even stressful thought patterns can cause subluxation. [top]

3. What is that cracking sound?

The audible, or “crack”, is a release of gas when the joint is adjusted. It may sound bad, but is no harm to the body. [top]

4. Why do I need adjusting so often?

How many times a patient needs adjusted varies from each individual. You must put many variables into place. e.g. How long have you had the injury? What is the diagnosis? What is your past physical history? Does the doctor need to know about your job details or a sports injury? Were you in a motor vehicle accident? Are these injuries that are due to repetitive motion, mental attitude, exercise regime, nutrition and/or diet? Have you had any surgeries? Do you smoke? The list of variables goes on, and is unique to each patient. [top]

5. Does the adjustment hurt?

Most adjustments do not cause pain, they relieve pains. With some conditions when the patient is not relaxed, an adjustment may cause the injury to smart. [top]

6. How long will each appointment take?

Appointments may vary from individual, but on an average 15 to 20 minutes is the norm for established patients. New patients may take 45 minutes to an hour. [top]

7. Do I have to have x-rays?

X-rays are a standard of care which every patient should want. This allows the doctor and patient to establish the structural integrity of the spine and extremities, and determine a course for your care plan. [top]

8. Do chiropractors have medical (M.D.) degrees?

Chiropractors do not have a Medical Degree, but have a Doctorate of Chiropractic. The years of study are very similar, with more focus on specific subjects: included are anatomy, orthopedics and x-ray. [top]

9. Will my health insurance cover chiropractic treatment?

Most insurance covers chiropractic care, but it is according to the terms of your individual policy. [top]

10. How is chiropractic different from any other kind of health care?

Chiropractic healthcare is a drugless and non-surgical approach to neuro-musculoskeletal ailments and enhancing overall nervous system performance. [top]

11. Do I have to keep coming back forever?

Chiropractic adjustments are not addictive. When patients feel better about themselves and are back to activities of daily living they will want to maintain this level of life. Most patients become in tune with their body and know when it is time for an adjustment. [top]

12. How long does a chiropractor go to school?

Chiropractic education varies from six to eight years, depending on the undergraduate studies and the degree. [top]

13. Does the doctor get adjusted?

Doctors of chiropractic have a very physical and mental job, as well as acquiring the stresses of having their own business. So, yes, we get adjusted, too! [top]

14. Aren't chiropractors just "back" doctors?

You can think of your joints like the tires on a car: they all have longevity but misalignment and imbalance will shorten the lifespan of each.

Chiropractors believe that a subluxation may compromise joint and organ functions. It is the understanding that the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is the master control system for the body. This system is encased in bony tissue (the skull and spinal column) for protection because it is the most sensitive and susceptible to injury or malfunction. So, a chiropractor is interested in healing much more than your back, a chiropractor is interested in maintaining the entire system’s well-being. [top]

15. How long until I feel better?

The healing process varies with each individual. Many things may help determine the length of time for treatment. For example: How long have you had the problem? What is the severity of the injury? Are you being compliant with the treatment the doctor prescribed (as in icing the treated area, stretching, and therapeutic exercise)? [top]

By following the care plan designed for you, this will lead the doctor and patient toward a specific goal. If the patient does not follow the care plan accordingly, the results may not have a timely outcome.

FOLLOW YOUR CARE PLAN.
