Headaches
Headaches are the body’s warning signal-telling you that something is wrong. Almost everyone can get a headache once in a while. It’s when you get them regularly that you need to take action.
Causes of Headaches
Headaches have a cause. They may be triggered by stress, but often the headaches are caused by misaligned bones in the neck, known as a subluxation. These bones may become misaligned from an automobile accident, a fall, or even by persistent poor posture. Nerves can become irritated and muscles can tighten, which affects circulation and causes your head to ache. Headaches can even be caused by problems in the pelvis or lower back, just as the foundation affects a building.
Painkillers Don't Work
If your headache is caused by a bone misalignment problem, drugs like aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin will not cure it. Your headache will still be there even though the pain killer doesn’t allow you to feel it.

Stiff Neck or Neck Pain
A stiff neck, a tense neck, shoulder pain—these are common complaints heard by chiropractors.
A neck pain and muscle spasm may go away after a day, but if it persists or keeps coming back then it’s probably more than just a muscle spasm. Chances are your neck pain is caused by a bone misalignment in your neck, known as a cervical subluxation. This usually starts with some kind of physical, mental or chemical stress.
If you could stop your neck pain without pain killers or muscle relaxers would you do it? If you take drugs for your neck and shoulder pain—STOP!
You are not solving the problem, you are covering it up. The science, technology, and experience offered by licensed Chiropractors can help you, by restoring the normal curve and motion of your neck. It is time to do something about your pain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Chiropractic can help symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome without drugs or surgery. Many people suffering from CTS also have neck pain which can also be helped.
What Is It?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that causes numbness, pain, weakness, tingling or burning of the wrists and/or hands. The carpal tunnel is at the wrist and is made up of 8 wrist bones and a ligament over the back of the wrist called the Retinacular Ligament. The tunnel is about the size of a pencil. Nine tendons and the median nerve must pass through this little tunnel.
CTS is known as a Repetitive Strain Injury because it often arises in the workplace where there is repetitive use of the hands and wrists. An example is a person who uses the mouse repetitively. Other examples include supermarket checkers, assemply line workers, carpenters, cashiers, beauticians etc.
What is the cause?
CTS can occur when one or more of the bones in the wrist are out of alignment putting pressure on the median nerve. This interferes with the transmission of the nerve to the hand. Any contition that causes pressure on the nerve can cause CTS.
Examples are:
- Repetitive movement of the hand.
- Repetitive forceful movements such as hammering.
- Trauma to the wrist
There is also a connection between the neck and the wrist. When there is a neck problem, it can exacerbate the wrist situation.
What can I do?
- See your Chiropractic doctor to evaluate your situation.
- Check your workstation. When using the computer, keep elbows at 90 degree angles. Keep wrists straight. Avoid flexing wrists as this compresses the nerve. Avoid craning your neck forward toward the screen. Take mini-breaks every half hour.
Low Back Pain
What causes low back pain?
- Muscle or Ligament Tear or Pull

Discs
Discs do not slip. The attachments to the vertebrae above and below the disc prevent slipping. Discs do tear, bulge, herniate, prolapse, rupture, and dessicate. The chiropractic approach to disc problems is to help restore better motion and position to the spinal joints. Besides reducing disc bulging, better spinal function helps decrease inflammation so the slow process of healing the surrounding soft tissues can begin.
Sciatica
Sciatica usually begins as an acute pain in the lower back and then extends down the back of either leg. The pain usually worsens with long periods of sitting or standing. The sciatic nerves are formed by five pairs of nerves exiting the spine in the lower back. They may endure abnormal pressure from bugling, herniated, or ruptured discs, resulting in swelling, inflamation, and pain when coughing, sneezing, or moving. By restoring joint motion and postioning, chiropractic care can improve disc height and spacing. Removing the source of pressure on the sciatic nerve roots allows them to heal.
Surgery
Surgery may alleviate low back pain, but at considerable risk. Surgical treatment often involves removing the facet joints at the back of the offending vertebrae, exposing the spinal cord. When a bulging disc puts pressure on the spinal cord or a nerve root, resulting in numbness, tingling, or leg pain, the surgical treatment involves cutting away the bulging disc tissue. This can permanently alter its ability to separate and cushion the adjacent bones, yet rarely addresses the underlying structural cause(s) of the problem. Chiropractic treatment is gentler, safer, and more effective than surgery.

Sciatica often worsens with extended bed rest. Pain pills or muscle relaxers do not correct the nerve compression caused by a bulging disc. At best, they cover up the pain, without addressing the underlying cause. Physical therapy merely exercises the unstable joints. Surgery is risky, often involving the cutting away of disc tissue or removal of bone to make room for the nerve. In the end, surgery still fails to address the root cause of your symptoms.

Arthritis
Warning Symptoms
The warning signs of arthritis include:
- Pain that occurs during or after movement, after extended periods of non-activity, or with change in weather.
- Joints may become progressively stiffer and difficult to move.
- Skin around joints may appear red, swollen, and warm to the touch
- Numbness, tingling, weakness and burning.
Chiropractors Treat Arthritis?
Absolutely! Arthritis is probably the number one condition Chiropractors treat. Over 50,000,000 people in the U.S. suffer from arthritis. Arthritis is a general term used to describe more than 100 chronic diseases of the joints, bones and muscles. The two most common types are Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes painful and often disabling joint inflammation.
Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear disease which wears away the cushioning cartilage in the joints. It can cause discs to wear out and bone to change its shape. It mostly affects weight bearing joints of the body like knees, hips, low back and the neck. It can be caused by injury or wear and tear on the joints. It develops when abnormal stress—i.e. being out of alignment—is put on a joint. It can also come from trauma to a joint such as a car accident or can come from many small injuries. Poor posture is a major cause of arthritis because it puts abnormal stress or weight on joints.
Chiropractic Care Helps
According to a study cited by the Arthritis Foundation, chiropractic adjustment may reduce the pain of osteoarthritis and improve joint function. Another survey done in 1999 found that 73% of the participants found chiropractic helpful. Chiropractic ranked the highest in terms of patient satisfaction. Another study found that elderly patients who received chiropractic care were less likely to suffer from arthritis and had greater mobility than those who did not. Other studies have found that chiropractic geriatric patients are less likely to have been hospitalized, less likely to have used a nursing home, more likely to exercise vigorously, and more likely to be mobile in the community.
How Chiropractic Helps
Chiropractic adjustment helps by improving joint mobility. Balancing posture restores the normal position of the joints and spine, relieving physical stresses on the joints. Improved mobility and alignment provides the joints a chance to heal naturally. Better spinal balance and mobility prevents and alleviates arthritis in the spine and in weight-bearing joints such as hips, knees, and ankles. This gently opens up the joints to take the stress off the nerves and thus relieves the pain. Chiropractic relieves the symptoms of arthritis and alleviates the cause without the use of drugs or surgery.
Other Methods of Prevention
Increasing the range of motion in the joint takes effort, and is counter-intuitive. However, normal range of motion is necessary for proper circulation and repair of joints. By increasing range of motion and flexibility throughout your body you are minimizing your chances of arthritis later in life. Proper nutrition can also help. Some people find that eliminating foods in the night shade group help. These foods include tomatoes, potatoes, egg plant, and bell peppers. Physical exercise also relieves symptoms as it strengthens bones, muscles and joints, increases flexibility, prevents joint deformities, improves the immune system, and reduces stress. Losing excess weight puts less stress on the joints.
Muscle Weakness
The brain controls everything in your body through the spinal cord, spinal nerves, and peripheral nerves also known as the nervous system. Your muscles are not an exception. The health of your muscle tissues depends largely on the information coming from and to the brain through the nerves. However, when the nerves supplying your muscles get injured, your brain is no longer able to maintain the health of the affected muscles. With an injury to your nerves, you may first experience pain or numbness in the muscles, then weakness of the muscles, and eventually loss of muscle mass.
The doctors at Performance Chiropractic will examine you thoroughly to determine the exact cause of stress on the nerves affecting your muscles. Then, they will apply gentle Chiropractic adjustment to improve joint mobility, and Chiropractic biophysics to correct spinal alignment. The increased mobility and alignment will aleviate the stresses that your injured vertebrae are placing on your spinal nerves, restoring your brain’s ability to control your muscles.
Numbness and Tingling
An injury to the nerves will often result in numbness and tingling in the affected area. The extent and the location of the injury to the nerves will determine the severity of such symptoms. Chiropractors are well trained to determine the exact location of the problem causing these symptoms as well as to treat them. If proper care is not given to injuries to your nerves, complications may arise including but not limited to weakening and/or loss of muscle mass.
Posture
Don’t stand up straight to please your mother. Do it for your health—and because it makes you look like royalty. Learn the best exercises to help you stand tall.
A normal spine dictates the following normal posture:
- Level shoulders
- Vertical head and neck
- Level hips
In the side or lateral view:
- Three curves pointing toward the jaw
- The ear hole lines up with the middle of the shoulder
Posture is very important because being out of alignment or crooked puts abnormal stress or weight on bone, discs, and joints, and wears them out, causing arthritis. Being out of alignment also affects the nerves which go to all the parts of the body including not only the muscles, but also the internal organs.
Poor posture over an extended period of time can result in loss of mobility and alignment of the vertebrae. Misaligned bones in the spine, called a subluxation, can lead to damage to both the discs and the the bones involved. Spinal imbalances such as lordosis or scoliosis can also cause damage. Often by the time symptoms appear, damage has already begun. |
